Farmington Bay Wildlife Management Area At Sunset

If you ask me, one of the side benefits of getting out in nature is sticking around after a day of bird watching and getting an opportunity to view a grand and colorful sunset.

Spectacular sunsets don’t always just happen, however, so those moments when they do appear always seem to make the day a little bit more special.

In fact, they rarely happen if truth be told and if I was to add up all times I actually witnessed what I would call a truly grand sunset I might be able to count them with the fingers on just one hand.

Now that is not to say I haven’t seen some spectacular sunsets, I have indeed seen many that have melted my heart but only a small handful of them are what I would categorize as grand.

But even when the sunset was just mediocre at best, spending a few minutes watching the day come to a close out on a nature preserve is about as serene and peaceful a moment as one could ever hope for.

Tonight, I had the urge to get out and try to photograph the great blue heron rookery at Farmington Bay with a sunset behind it.

I have photographed the rookery a few times at sunset before but it has indeed been a while.

(Tonight’s sunset at Farmington Bay wasn’t what I would call grand but it was quite impressive for how small it actually was.)

Unfortunately, the sunset tonight had other intentions in mind so I wasn’t able to capture any kind of sunset behind the great blue heron rookery, mostly due to what little color did appear being way off to the right of the rookery, much too far out of place for what I was hoping for.

But it wasn’t a wasted trip, however, not by a long shot.

I drove around a little bit and found a frozen pond with a small flock of geese that seemingly were tucked in for the evening that presented themselves in the perfect location for what little sunset appeared tonight.

It wasn’t much but after many years of photographing sunsets, I have learned how to squeeze every bit of color out of even the smallest of sunsets, like what I was faced with tonight.

What you see is here on this blog is what I was able to grab with my tired and old Canon Rebel camera after tweaking a few key settings to help make what little color I had to work with really pop.

After getting out and photographing a couple sunsets lately I am thinking of getting back to blogging more about the particulars of outdoor photography.

I have another website geared solely towards photography with a small blog I am going to start writing for again about more of the “how-to’s” regarding outdoor photography.

It will deal with more of the camera settings and what I do to get the images for my websites whereas this blog I want to leave more for just nature and bird watching related posts.

For those interested in learning more about outdoor photography, head on over to my photography website where you can sign up for blog notifications as well.

I won’t post as frequently as I do here but I will post from time to time about some of the images I have taken and how I photographed them.

As an example, here is a blog post about photographing sunsets on the Great Salt Lake with a few tips about how I photograph a sunset.

Honestly, I kind of let the blog go a little stagnant as I am definitely more interested in blogging about nature than just photography itself but I am thinking it’s time to get back to that particular website and put some time and effort behind it once again.

Anyways, I am grateful for all your readership and support by sharing posts on your favorite social media outlet.

If you haven’t already signed up for blog post notifications here, I offer you to head on over and sign up to receive email notifications for future blog posts.
