Milkweed Seed Planting Event At Farmington Bay WMA

Monarch butterflies out in the west are in a steep decline, so much so last year’s winter counts (2020) in California netted less than 2,000 monarch butterflies.

So far from what I have read this year, their numbers seem to be rebounding slightly but the monarch butterfly still needs a lot of help to get its numbers back to a normal and sustainable level.

One thing we all can do is to plant milkweed in our own yards and encourage municipalities to do the same as every milkweed plant in this uphill fight to save the monarch butterfly is crucial.

A couple of months ago, I did just that as I approached, Billy Fennimore, the manager at the Farmington Bay WMA Eccles Education Center, about doing a milkweed seed planting event and it was very well received.

Well, for those of you in Utah and available next Friday, November 19, 2021, a simple presentation followed by a milkweed seed planting get-together will commence at 11:00 a.m.

It’s a very kid-friendly gathering where milkweed seeds will be scattered and planted along the walkways and edges of the parking lot at the nature center, allowing visitors a good opportunity to view monarch butterfly caterpillars in the years to come.
