2019 Beginning Outdoor Photography Workshop

Each year, I partner with the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge on their annual swan day to put on a Beginning Outdoor Photography workshop. This year’s event will take place on March 9, 2019 at the refuge visitors center in Brigham City, Utah.

I can’t remember how many years we have been putting the photography workshop on but I think this might be the 5th year now, if my memory serves me correctly.

The workshop will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the refuge visitors center classroom and it will last about 2 hours.

It is geared towards those photographers just starting out or others who have some photography experience but want to take better outdoor images. It will be held indoors but participants can bring their own gear and head out afterwards on either the nearby nature trail or drive down to the auto tour route to practice the newly learned techniques and tips

We will cover a variety of topics, including basic gear, light, composition and some quick editing techniques. It is a very informal setting so bring your questions and a notebook.

The great thing about this event, besides it being totally free, is it coincides with the refuge’s swan day and the tundra swan migration. This time of year the refuge hosts thousands of migrating tundra swans and they are easily viewed on the auto tour route, a 12 mile self guided drive through the refuge.

Nature as a whole deserves our respect and attention.

To attend the workshop, please call the refuge directly and register for the photography workshop. Class size is limited so we want to make sure there is space enough for all who want to attend. You don’t need to register for any of the swan day activities besides the photography workshop, however.

To contact the refuge about their swan day event and to register for the photography workshop, you can call them at (435) 723-5887. The visitors center is located just west of I-15 on the Forest Street exit. Their address is 2155 West Forest Street, Brigham City, Utah 84302. You can also visit the refuge website for more information and to follow their social media channels.

Nothing beats being out in nature when it does something spectacular, like a grand sunset. This one was photographed on the Bear River, just a couple miles prior to the auto tour route.
