Just to get it out of the way, I am a fan of Antelope Island, and one for a variety of reasons mind you.
The bird watching on Antelope Island can be very good much of the time, the sunsets on the nearby Great Salt Lake are oftentimes spectacular, and, of course, the large bison bulls are quite the impressive animals for sure.
Oh yes, the big bison bulls, arguably one of the main attractions on Antelope Island without any question.
It is quite a thrill to see one in close proximity, but from the safety of the car, of course.
That, in fact, was exactly what I was blessed to experience just last week while visiting Antelope Island to look for the great horned owls on the southern end of the island by the Fielding Garr Ranch.
While visiting Antelope Island, I always drive all the roads in search of the big bison bulls, and most of the time I have found they can be seen on the west side of the island around the visitors center in small, loose groups or just on their own.
On this trip, I came across one of the larger bison bulls that grazed his way right past my vehicle so, naturally being a photographer, I had to take a short video to share with all of you.
I will say up front, I take the bulls and all of the bison on the island as what they are, wild animals, and as such, take safety around them very seriously.
In this particular instance, I was inside my car when this bull approached me so even though the massive bison was only 12 feet away, I wasn’t worried but still kept quiet as he casually grazed by the vehicle.
This is one of the reasons I purchase the yearly state park pass, to view and photograph the massive bison bulls on Antelope Island anytime I get the urge.
And to be honest, I visit Antelope Island at least once per week during the winter and 2-3 times per week during the summer to enjoy a bit of nature and serenity just a few minutes from civilization.
