Antelope Island Catches On Fire

wildfire on antelope island

Today, while on one of my twice-weekly trips to Antelope Island, I was able to witness a small wildfire that started on the Buffalo Point Trail. At this point, I have not heard what started the fire or if the park personnel know of what caused it to ignite.

I was there, however, to help report the fire to the park management and photograph the quick response by park personnel which quickly subdued and put out the fire.

Summer is a very dry period in Utah and Antelope Island is one of the driest spots in northern Utah. Fires do happen on the island from time to time, many of which are started by dry thunderstorms and lightning but since today there were no storms or lighting the cause of the fire would seem to be more of a man-made situation but that is unknown at this time.

All in all, this is a strong reminder to be careful when out on Antelope Island or anywhere in Utah this time of year when wildfires are so easily started. We are fortunate this fire was small and caught early so it could be put out before major damage or injury could happen. The island is, in my own personal opinion, one of Utah’s greatest treasures and we need to take care of it for future generations to enjoy.

Below is a photo essay of my time observing and photographing the fire and the quick response by park personnel which quickly put out the fire. For more information about Antelope Island State Park, visit their website, and let’s be safe when outdoors this summer.
