Our Photo Of The Week
As I mentioned in a previous blog post, I rarely get photographs of northern harriers; they are what I refer to as my nemesis bird, one of a few, actually, but the most frustrating one of all in my book.
This particular female northern harrier gave me a decent opportunity to photograph her in flight on the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge auto tour route in February of 2022.
Back then, I was still using my old Canon Rebel T4i, and I would still be using it today if I hadn’t worn it out after many years of reliable use; the shutter finally gave out after thousands of images taken with it.
The shutter speed for this image was 1/3200 of a second, and if you are wanting to photograph birds in flight, speeds in this range are quite desirable if you have enough light to get the camera to photograph that fast.
I was also using my Tamron 150-600 mm lens with this image taken at 400 mm, so a shorter lens could have done the job on this particular bird, but I prefer to use my 600 mm lens for birds because you never know how close or how far away they are going to let you get.
