One of the most rewarding images a bird photographer can obtain is that of a bird in flight, like this American white pelican coming off the water on the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge auto tour route.
I have written about photographing birds in flight in a previous post, but the basic concept is to use the fastest shutter speed possible with whatever amount of light you have at your disposal.
This pelican was photographed at 1/2500th of a second using an aperture of f/6.3 and ISO of 650, giving me plenty of shutter speed to freeze the movement of the bird and the trailing splash upon takeoff.
