Experience The Sound Of The Yellow Headed Blackbird

Occasionally I like to put my camera in video mode and record the sights and sounds of what I am photographing. Last summer my photography endeavors took me to the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge to photograph the yellow headed blackbird and I opted to do just that for a brief moment.

I am quite fond of the harsh song of the yellow headed blackbird. It’s not very musical or soothing per say but for some reason it really speaks to me. Maybe it’s because the raspy melody and awkward looking display are one of those sure fire signs spring is actually here. Well, what ever the reason I do love to hear them call and watch them display.

Watch and listen to the video below as this yellow headed blackbird calls and preens for a bit. If you listen closely to the background you can hear the rival red winged blackbird offering its softer sounding song of spring as well.

These are the typical sounds of the marsh during spring and summer on the Bear River Migratory Bird refuge. It’s an orchestra from nature of sorts and free to all who come and visit the 12 mile self guided refuge auto tour route.
